Interesting article! I generally prefer the smaller end of Scrum's 7 +- 2 recommendation, so 5 as an ideal number is completely plausible to me. But for some types of products (video games come to mind) it's hard to get a complete skill set among five people, so we pay the human price of the larger team. I group of 9 will probably naturally break itself into teamlets anyway.
